Armed robbery incident in Mauritania

The UK P&I Club's loss prevention department has published this advice on the 15th December.

QUOTE

The Association has been advised of a recent robbery incident at Nouadhibou, Mauritania.

A gang of men armed with knives boarded a Member’s ship during loading operations and threatened the crew.  The gang also broke into the ship’s stores and machinery spaces and stole various supplies.

Despite numerous appeals from the Master, there was no local response to the attack.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises that the crime levels in the area are moderate but steadily increasing. A number of thefts and violent incidents have been reported in the area. For further information, please visit the FCO website.

Members are recommended to take particular care during loading operations as gangs may infiltrate stevedores and other port workers to gain access to the ship.
