Tensions in the Middle East – analysing the maritime implications

What are the maritime repercussions of conflicts across the Middle East?

Since the Hamas attack on 7 October, the Middle East has been going through a particularly turbulent period. The regional and international repercussions are significant and have already impacted several maritime areas. The Eastern Mediterranean, the Red Sea and, to a lesser extent, the Persian Gulf are likely to be exposed to direct or indirect threats from regional actors hostile to Israel, foremost among them Iranian proxies. As a direct extension of the conflict on land, the Eastern Mediterranean is exposed to the ballistic threat from Hezbollah in particular, among other issues. In addition, Houthi forces in Yemen, Iran's second relay in the region, have demonstrated the capability to launch cruise missiles and drones across the Red Sea. We will look at the maritime repercussions and potential developments in the months ahead.
